[…] I really dont think you should worry so much about it, Annie. But if you want to revenge yourself and stay one step ahead of the neighbours, there's a new fashion for decor going around down here that I'm sure they won't have heard of yet. I saw it first at Madam C—'s Salon this Thursday; you remember how her sitting room was painted that serene pale mint colour? She has started pairing it with deep jewel tones in blue and purple. Such a cacophony! It ought to be hideous, really, but the overall effect becomes strangely charming, although not very calming on the nerves. Nothing is destined to be calm this season, not even our salons! She got the idea from the young Lord Sandoreale, it seems. I wouldn't accept an invitation to that house these days; you know I like to keep out of politics, and it seems like half an army is camped on the grounds, which sounds frightful. But Mme C told me the young Lord R has been holding small intimate coffee parties in his apartments there, which are decorated in a fascinating combination of pastels and deep reds, arranged to bring out the greatest conflict! She could not stop enthusing about them, and the lovely time she had there discussing avant-garde poetry or some such, and I am sure fashionable hosts across the city are reupholstering their furniture as we speak.
I myself have been fabric shopping just this morning, and I've included some swatches in this letter so that you may see what I mean.
