Dear Laurence,
I hope you are recovering from the wedding. I trust you enjoyed the company, at the very least; you must come for tea one of these days and tell me what you got up to after the party—I saw whose arm you departed on.
What do you make of our new matched set of Resshan ambassadors? They paid me a visit a few days ago, by wehich I mean: the lady Cecily paid me a visit and her brother was tugged along in her orbit, silently observing, like a particularly decorative spider in very tight breeches. I don't know what their game is yet but I somehow think finding out will not prove an overly arduous task.
I must admit however, that the things Lady Cecily and I spoke about have been gnawing at me ever since. You know I have always seen my estate as a refuge from the harsh ugliness of the world, a place to carefully prune and nourish a more beautiful truth. Now I find myself wondering if the flowers I've tended might not have sharper thorns than I assumed or intended. But still, the thought of risking the overturning of my beautiful garden repulses me, whatever the cause.
I don't tell you this to add my troubles to yours, dear boy. It simply occurs to me that you may find a use for my sweet tongue in some of your current endeavours. I do feel a slight responsibility for setting you upon them in the first place, and as such, consider me at your disposal. No, not like that, I know well how inconsiderately devoted you are.
